Did I hear there will be a new shop in the Food Court?

YES! UMD Dining Services is proud to announce the addition of a sub shop concept to the Plaza Food Court.

Plans are in place and construction has begun this summer with the hope to open for fall semester. The concept is exciting and we will be using reclaimed wood from the Globe Elevator of the Twin Ports.
note: name is still in progress... "sub station" nor "sub shop" is the planned name

Fueling up for Finals

5 simple steps to a healthy & productive finals week

1. Limit your buzz

Drinks with CaffeineExcess caffeine (>500mg) can cause insomnia, nervousness, restlessness, irritability, stomach upset, fast heartbeat, and muscle tremors -- none of which are very conducive to focused studying!

Energy drinks are loaded with sugar, which can provide a temporary energy boost, but usually can cause you to "crash" a short time later. Avoid or limit your energy drink consumption as much as possible.

Moderate doses are not harmful:
***Limit your caffeine intake to 200-300 mg/day***
Use this resource to determine how much caffeine is in your favorite beverages.

Healthy Treat or Sugary Sweet?

Is your favorite granola bar actually healthy, or is it nutritionally equivalent to that of a candy bar?

A "staple" college snack includes the granola bar. This can be a healthy & convenient choice, but buyer beware as some can contain as much sugar as candy bars!

EARTH WEEK!

Earth Week at UMD April 21st-April 25th

You don't have to go completely vegan or vegetarian to have an impact on the environment

Why Meatless?

Producing 1 pound of beef uses...

  • as much fuel as driving a car 32 miles.
  • as much grain as 20 loaves of bread
  • energy as 256 100 watt light bulbs per hour
  • as much water as taking 60 showers
Over a year, if everyone in the United States ate no meat or cheese just one day a week, it would be like not driving 91 billion miles - or taking 7.6 million cars off the road. (Source: Environmental Working Group)
